Brilliant Books: There’s a Dinosaur in my Bathtub

I’m back with another ‘Brilliant Books’! This time I’m featuring a recent loan from our local library which has really appealed to T’s sense of humour.

Image of front cover. Dinosaur has a long curly moustache.

There’s a Dinosaur in my Bathtub is a whimsical tale about a girl named Amelia and the dinosaur who has come to stay for the summer.

The book begins by Amelia confiding in the reader that she has a secret…

“I have something very important to tell you. Shhh! It’s a secret so you mustn’t tell anyone in the whole world…OK?”

This is such a enticing and intriguing start to the book. When I read this – in hushed tones, of course – T’s eyes light up with excitement at being in on the secret! It means she’s engaged before the story has even begun.

Dinosaur is lying in bath with 'Le Journal' newspaper. He wears a red shower cap and the caption reads 'Bonjour!'

Now, it is not just any old dinosaur who has come to stay – this is a French dinosaur. And what do French dinosaurs love most? Stinky cheese, bien sûr! Now perhaps this book does nothing to alleviate stereotypes, but this element of it certainly makes my three year old giggle! It just so happens that I bought J some potted Stilton for Christmas (because I knew he’d love it, not because I wanted the pretty pot, obviously) and three months on T hasn’t tired of laughing about DADDY’S STINKY CHEESE! So this book really is right up her street.

Pierre and Amelia enjoying a picnic of stinky cheese.

The story is narrated by Amelia, and doesn’t have a storyline as such, but describes how she and Pierre (well, what else would you call a French dinosaur?) spend their summer days together.

Pierre and Amelia enjoy a rollercoaster. The bathtub is their carriage!

The story also has the odd French phrase in, which adds to the fun. T loves trying to say them and I love hearing her try! The best we’ve had so far was an attempt at ‘C’est deliceux’ which came out as “C’est la de shush!” And she said it with such confidence too!

Pierre hangs from the moon in a hot-air-balloon style basket. The caption reads 'a bientôt'.

We’ve so enjoyed reading this book together – T requests it time and time again! It’ll be time to return it to the library soon but I suspect this won’t be the last time we borrow it!

If you like the sound of this book, you can order your own copy here.

Amelia and Pierre are in the bath. Beside him is a large tub of 'super duper extra cheesy popcorn'.
